I get an «unable to mount location» when I am trying to mount my HDD.
I see the hardrive on the disk app. /dev /sdf1 and it says the partition is «unknown.

what is the make & model of your machine ?
which version of LinuxMint are you using ?

Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon
Cinnamon Version 4.2.4
My PC was custom made. It has Ryzen 7 CPU and B450 Gaming Plus motherboard.
Just to add. This hardrive was working before but I had to get the motherboard replaced and now its not mounting.

The first thing I would do is unplug and replug the sata cable to that drive (both ends, drive and motherboard) and see if it works.
The second thing I would do is plug the sata cable into a different sata slot on the motherboard. If you haven’t got the user manual for your motherboard, google.
Do you have a spare sata cable, just in case it’s the cable?
- Run gparted and post a screen shot for that drive (you can select the drive from the drop down top right in the gparted window). If you do that also goto the menu view > device information (gives us more info in a panel in the left of the gparted screen). Note — if you unplug some of your usb drives, your problem drive will no longer be sdf — you need to spot it by the name and drive size.
- In a terminal run sudo parted -l note that is a lowercase L and post the output.

I’d also like to add that sudo is not necessary with nano etc. for viewing these system files unless you do intend to edit them. They will open as non-writeable, avoiding the chance of an accidental edit.
Tip: There are easier ways to list such file contents as well e.g. cat /etc/fstab .

Thanks! This solved my problem!
The boot time of my system was even affected. I thought I had to reinstall everything.
I didnt realize a simple SATA cable can cause so much problems.

I hope somebody around can help me, I was reffered to this forum by a friend. I am aware that my problem is not Ubuntu-related, but here goes nothing I’ve already posted on the Linux Mint forums, but since I havn’t had a reply as of yet, I am trying my luck here as well.
Now I did search and did google for an answer, but what I’ve found where either unanswered topics or different situations than mine. Most of the times, the error was described as occuring either in Samba or when attempting to use network sharing — which is not my case. Second, I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux, so please be gentle.
Now to get to the actual problem description: I’ve been wanting to try Linux for a while now, and decided yesterday [ after some google-ing around ] to get Mint Nadia with MATE Desktop on my laptop. Said laptop is an Acer Aspire 5315, 1.86 Ghz Intel Celeron processor 540 with 1GB DDR2. Not really top of the line, but one makes do. Because I was confident I could learn using Linux well enough for my needs and the computer’s performance and because I was rather sick and tired of Windows’ errors, I didn’t go for the dual-OS option, but installed only Mint.
I used the New Partition Table to discard all previous partitions and create three completly new ones: for "/" root, "/home" and swap. That seemed to go well, Linux was installed and after rebooting the system I was the rather proud owner of a fresh Mint machine. Until I went to "Computer" and tried to access my internal HDD.
What I have are three items: 120GB Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive and a File System Drive. I cannot access my HDD, I only get an "Unable to mount location. Can’t mount file" error.
The sudo fdisk -l command gives me the following result:

I will do what I can to help. Using the "fdisk" command correctly, you are off to a good start !
Let’s see if we can find out what is going on> Firstly in accordance with your "fdisk" You are aware there is only the one hard disk available ? And on this disk is : 1 primary partition containing / "root", 1 extended partition containing 2 logical partitions, /home and swap. As I understand what you are referring to, you do not see the files on your /home partition ?
In the / partition is a directory called "/boot". See if the system sees it; terminal command:
—Note that is an Upper Case ‘D’—
On a new install you should see in the listing 2 directories (drwxr where the d = directory).

Hello, I just installed Mint MATE 19.2 onto a Thinkpad x200 tablet with 2 ssd’s. It previously had Trisquel on it but this is my first time installing an OS or really doing anything with Linux. During the install I erased the disk and put Mint on but now I can only find one hard drive (the one it is installed on). I took a quick look around when it had Trisquel on it and it showed the one drive with the OS on it and the other one as a mass storage device (iirc). Now when I go to Computer I see [a drive and File System] (https://i.imgur.com/nCzG8XC.jpg ) (sorry for crappy phone pic) but when I try to click on the drive it says “Unable to mount location”. Looking through GParted there seems to be just the one drive .
Did I mess something up during the install? Like I said I’m very new to all this so I don’t really know what I’m doing here. Any kind of help is appreciated.

If your config is right, it can be due to a protocol miss-match where your client has not enabled SMB3 but by default the other side (server) has enabled it.
You can test this out to see with the smbclient tool
smbclient -L YourIP
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_INVALID_NETWORK_RESPONSE
If you got the above error it is likely a protocol error that can be fixed and solved like this:
