Как пользоваться wasabi wallet

# Explain Wasabi like I'm 5

Wasabi Wallet is an open-source, non-custodial, privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet with built-in coinjoins. It is a piece of software that runs on your computer and helps you to manage your bitcoins. Although Wasabi has some very advanced magic under the hood, it is rather easy to use. You can generate a new set of seed words, or import already existing ones. With Wasabi you can receive bitcoins into your full control, and you can send them to someone else without needing permission from any other person or entity. There is also a powerful auto-coinjoin feature to help obfuscate your transaction history. You can use Wasabi to manage your hardware wallet, and it even connects to your own full node. Of course, Wasabi is libre and open-source, which means you have full control over the software you manage your money with.

# Installing Wasabi

Installing Wasabi is super-easy. Go to the official website wasabiwallet.io

open in new window and download the version for your operating system. You can then install Wasabi as you would do any other software on your computer.

See this chapter for a detailed step-by-step tutorial for all operating systems, and also how to verify the PGP signature.

# Generating a Wallet

When you start Wasabi for the first time, the dialog to generate a new wallet will be open. You can set a unique name for the wallet so that you remember what it is for. In the next step, Wasabi will show your 12 recovery words. These must be carefully backed up, in the correct order, as they are needed to recover your wallet (together with the password) on another computer or in another wallet software. Next, choose a very secure password, as this encrypts the secrets, and should not be guessed by others. You will always need this password in order to spend your bitcoins, so take great care to back it up properly. Make sure you store the backup of your recovery words in a different location than the backup of your password.

If you ever need to restore your wallet in Wasabi, or any other wallet, you will need both: your password AND your 12 recovery words.

See this chapter for more information on how to securely generate your wallet.

# Receiving bitcoin

In order to receive bitcoin, you need to generate an address in the Receive dialog. But first, you must label it with the names of any observers who know that this address is yours. For example, if Alice pays you back for last nights pizza, then the label is Alice . This is an important feature for you and the wallet to know which coin is from whom, and it will help with your privacy in the future. Once this newly generated address receives some coins, Wasabi Wallet will automatically hide this used address, so you don't reuse it by accident.

See this chapter for a tutorial on how to properly label your addresses and receive bitcoin.

# Sending bitcoin

Sending process is different depending on the privacy of coins you have. Assuming you have enough private coins the sending process is the following:

  1. Click the Send button (top right corner) at the main view.
  2. Insert the address of the receiver and type in the amount the receiver should get, then click Continue .
  3. Enter the name of the person or company receiving the payment and click Continue .
  4. Make sure everything is filled in correctly in Preview Transaction window and click Confirm .
  5. Type in your password and click Continue .

You will now see a pop-up window telling you that the transaction is broadcasted to the Bitcoin network.

See this chapter for more details about sending bitcoin and the privacy nuances of it.

# Coinjoin with Wasabi

If you don't like that your employer knows where you spend your money, or that a merchant can find out how much money you have, then you should coinjoin your bitcoin, as this breaks link to its transaction history. Although the coinjoin protocol is a bit complex, it is very easy to use in Wasabi. The wallet automatically coinjoins all your funds, so that your money becomes private. This process might take some time (hours/days). You can still use your wallet in the mean time, however it is a best practice to only use private funds, which the wallet does automatically when possible. At the wallet's homescreen the percentage indicates the progress to making your wallet fully private. The exact available private amount of bitcoin is listed as PRIVATE .

See this chapter for a thorough analysis of coinjoin, details on the Wasabi implementation and best practices on how to use it properly.

Wasabi Wallet

Wasabi Wallet is a bitcoin wallet designed with privacy in mind. The wallet gives the user control of different “UTXOs”. A UTXO is simply an unspent transaction output and is often referred to as “coin” (and is what makes up individual bitcoins). UTXOs are associated with bitcoin addresses and can be traced on the blockchain. This can be used to track users and try to determine who owns what. The most common heuristics for tracking users can be broken if you “mix” your UTXOs with other peoples UTXOs (and use the same amounts). The method is often referred to as “coinjoin” as is a service Wasabi Wallet offers as well.

Most implementations of coinjoin (sometimes called mixers) is by third parties that control the whole process. That means that they can steal your funds and destroy your privacy if they like (you have to trust them). This is not the case with Wasabi Wallet. The only central part is a “coordinator” that constructs the transactions and that you connect to with Tor to ensure anonymity. You control your own private keys during the whole process.

Mixing bitcoin is extra important if you bought them at an exchange that use KYC (know your customer). In that case, you’ll have your name and maybe even address attached to a set of UTXOs and you can never know who has that information. This might later get mixed with funds in another wallet you control and parts, or all, of those funds might be linked to you. This can to a large degree be fixed if you use Wasabi Wallet.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to keep up with everything happening in this project. There’s many more qualified people for that task.

Best practises to handle mixed outputs

This information might be outdated, but might be worth reading through anyway

Depending on how much you mix and what anonymity set you settle for, you´ll end up with a lot of smaller outputs. If you deposit 1 bitcoin and mix to the smallest denominator, you’ll end up with 10 0,1-bitcoin outputs.

So, how should you handle withdrawals to cold storage and mixing in general? If you mix larger amounts, don’t withdraw all your mixed bitcoins in the same transaction. The key is to be unpredictable. Chain analysis companies are looking for patterns. So, avoid depositing and withdrawing the same amount. If you deposit 1 bitcoin and mix it, don’t combine all the mixed outputs to transfer 1 bitcoin out in the same transaction. You would still have improved your anonymity from the mixing but you can improve it even more if you deposit 1 bitcoin, mix it and withdraw in batches of say 0,3, 0,5 and 0,2 bitcoin during different times.

Wasabi Wallet -

Wasabi Wallet —

Wasabi Wallet

Опция CoinJoin в Wasabi Wallet

Wasabi

Wasabi Wallet

Кошелек Ledger Nano S и Wasabi Wallet

  • Trezor One
  • Trezor model T
  • Ledger Nano S
  • Coldcard

Bitcoin Core.

The Ten Commandments

Wasabi Wallet is an open-source project with many contributors. When downloading the wallet, you may chose to go to the official site or to the official GitHub to build from source. Wasabi is available at our official site:

Please check signatures after completing downloads, the concern here is that you may accidentally fall for a phishing attempt and be on a malicious site downloading a malicious piece of software.

Alternatively, you may also build the code from source here, instructions are available here:

3 — Keep your mnemonic words and password safely stored (BOTH!)

When creating a new wallet — write down your mnemonic seed AND password and store those safely. Wasabi is a fully non-custodial wallet, which means that should always be in possession of your keys, and this means safely storing a backup in case your computer is lost or the wallet crashes. Often times when things go wrong, users panic. If you have done this step, there is very little you have to worry about. Also, under no circumstance should you reveal the password or mnemonic words to anyone that asks for them. Lastly, understand that if you lose your password, it becomes much harder (if not impossible) to restore your wallet — so store both safely!

4 — Practice good labeling AND try to never reuse addresses

Each time you receive coins, you will be asked to create a label. This label is only for you and is stored exclusively on your device. Wasabi has strong coin control features, and as you continue to use the wallet, you will observe that the history of your coins will appear, and this history is only useful to you if you are practicing good labeling. An example of a good label:

June 20 — $400 from Coinbase, primary account

June 7 — 0.2 BTC Received from Bob via Bisq

Examples of bad labels:

Lastly, if you must use an exchange, try to ask for a new deposit address on each deposit. In the same way that you should never receive Bitcoin to the same address twice, you should try to avoiding sending Bitcoin to the same address twice.

5 — CoinJoin whenever possible and be patient!

The process of engaging in a CoinJoin is as simple as selecting a coin or coins to en-queue and entering your password. Once coins have en-queued for CoinJoining, you must keep your computer online and awake, as the CoinJoin process is interactive. As a coinjoin is really just many users (up to 100) en-queuing coins at the same time, it may take up to two hours for you to successfully participate in a CoinJoin and clean outputs should only be spent once the CoinJoin transaction is confirmed. For context, Wasabi currently does 18 CoinJoins a day, or roughly one every 1 hour and 20 minutes. As more users join the network, the frequency of these CoinJoins will go up. Lastly, if you are able and patient enough to re-mix your coins, please do so. Re-mixing coins is nearly free and greatly encouraged!

6 — Use separate profiles

When you put a label on an address, or ask a question on this Reddit or send coins to a merchant be wary of the profile you choose. If you can create a dummy Reddit account as opposed to an account where you may have revealed your personal details elsewhere — use that. When you spend coins from your wallet, consider what you might want to keep private from the merchant or individual you are interacting with. In the same way that reusing addresses hurts your privacy, consolidating all of your online behavior into one profile can do the same.

7 — Never merge mixed and unmixed coins, and avoid large merges of mixed coins!

The first part should be somewhat intuitive — coins in your wallet have shields (red, yellow, green and green +) and it is at a minimum important to never send non-red coins (coins with anonset > 1) with red coins (coins with anonset == 1). By merging your tainted coins with your mixed coins, you undo the privacy benefits of CoinJoins! Further, when sending mixed coins to your cold storage, make sure to send your coins in parallel. Don't merge all of your Bitcoin (more than 0.8 BTC) in a single transaction! Instead, take your time and send coins to multiple addresses belong to your cold storage over a few hours or days. If you are sending coins to an exchange, you can get the same result by requesting a brand new address to receive coins.

8 — Avoid 3rd party servers & Buy Bitcoin P2P

Wasabi is designed to allow users to see their balances without any concern that a third party would be able to link your addresses to you, or to each other. Very few wallets can say this, but if you proceed to enter your address into a block explorer, or use a third party wallet with your keys or your hardware device — all bets are off. So if you want to check on the status of a transaction or the balance on an address, you should first:

(a) Check your Wasabi Wallet

(b) Check through your full node

(c) Use a block explorer through Tor (e.g. Blockstream.info T address)

If you think that forensics companies are not paying big money to block explorers for user information, you are wrong. Even something as simple as leaving a comment on a YouTube video or Reddit post will be scraped.

More importantly, if you are using a hardware wallet, an easy way to undo the previous times you plugged in the wallet through non-private applications is to create a new account on the device with a passphrase. For example, for ledger nano s, you can do this in the device home screen > security > passphrase. Remember Commandment 2!

Remember, Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer cash system, so when you have the opportunity to do so, buy your coins directly from someone you know or through a P2P market place. Not only will this benefit your privacy, it will save you on exchange fees and potential insolvency issues with the exchange you are dealing with.

9 — Run your own full node (if you can)

Wasabi will work just fine without a local full node on your device, however, if you can spare the resources on your device, running a full node will do that much more for your privacy. Local full nodes will (when running in tandem with Wasabi) be automatically used for querying blocks.

10 — Use Lightning

Wasabi is an ideal wallet for many things, but trade-offs exist with everything. If you have small amounts of un-mixed change from previous CoinJoins and you are unable to meet the requirements to engage in a COinJoin, consider using that coin to open a lightning channel. Lightning is still a project in its' early days, but the privacy topology of lightning payments is much more ideal over on-chain payments if you have the choice. Routing large amounts can be uncertain, but for small amounts the network is becoming steadily more reliable. Currently Wasabi does not support in-wallet lightning features, but it is on the road-map.
