8 pin cpu power supply что это

Older motherboards require a 4-pin CPU power plug or power connector for powering all the hardware connected to your computer’s motherboard. On the other hand, the latest motherboards require an 8-pin power connector to power the powerful CPU and other internal and external computer devices.
In this article, we will help you understand what your CPU power needs are and how you can economically fulfill them. We will also discuss the need for a 4-pin and an 8-pin CPU power plug, so you can choose the best option for powering your computer system’s motherboard.
Do I Need Both The 8 Pin and 4 Pin CPU Power Plug?
If your motherboard has an 8 + 4 pin power connector, then we will recommend you connect both of the CPU power plugs. In this way, you can join as many devices to your motherboard as possible because your motherboard will have enough power to run them all except for your graphics card (also known as GPU).
If you have a low-power CPU installed on your motherboard and a lesser number of memory modules (RAMs), storage devices (HDDs or SSDs), and other USB devices, then a 4-pin power plug will work. But if you have hardware requiring more power, you must connect an 8-pin CPU power plug.

In case your computer system motherboard has two 8-pin CPU power plugs or connectors, then you must connect both of the 8-pin cords to your motherboard. It is the only way to provide sufficient power demanded by your PC motherboard. Not only will your CPU consume this power, but also the RAMs, SSDs, and other devices.
You may have upgraded a motherboard that requires an 8-pin CPU power plug, but your power supply unit (PSU) has either a 4 -pin connector or a 6-pin or both of them. In this case, instead of buying a new power supply, you can use an adapter cable. A 6-inch adapter cable should be long enough for connection.
This cable will connect to your PSU’s 4-pin connector and convert it into an 8-pin connector. On the other hand, we suggest you upgrade your power supply unit because it will benefit you in the future, especially when you want to increase the number of devices connected to your computer system’s motherboard.
The 4-pin CPU power plugs were used with the older motherboards. It was because the older hardware could not connect more devices to it than the latest ones. The other reason was a bit technical that motherboards with a 4-pin connector did not have more electric paths on their PCB (printed circuit board).
On the other hand, nearly all of the latest motherboards require an 8-pin CPU power plug or connector cable. And the reason behind this is more paths on their PCB (printed circuit board). This is to fulfill the power needs of more hardware connected to it and keep it as cool as possible.
- PS4 Connector
A 4-Pin connector is also known as a PS4 connector. This connector is used for both motherboard (CPU) and GPU. The maximum current supply through this connector is 155W. Most of the low-end CPUs and high-end GPUs require this PS4 connector.
- EPS connector
The 8-pin connector is called the ESP connector. This connector is used to supply current to your CPU. The maximum capacity of this connector is 234W. If you have a CPU with more than 155 TDP, then you need this ESP connector.
Can I Use 8 Pin CPU Cable for a 4-Pin CPU?
You can use an 8-pin CPU cable for a 4-pin CPU, which will work without any problems. Most older motherboards have a 4-pin ESP motherboard port and use a 4-pin CPU power plug or cable for switching on. This power is divided into parts for your CPU, RAMs, SSDs, and other devices.
If you have such a motherboard and an upgraded power supply unit (PSU) with an 8-pin CPU cable, then don’t worry. Just split the 8-pin connector into two 4-pin connectors and connect either of the halves to the motherboard of your computer system. A PSU with more power can efficiently run a motherboard with less power.
How Much Power Does a 4-Pin CPU Connector Provide?
If you use an ATX power supply unit (PSU), its 4-pin CPU connector will provide more or less 108 watts of power. This power is enough for older motherboards with built-in graphics processing units (GPUs). But the latest motherboard with an 8-pin or 8 + 4-pin ESP port requires more power to power more devices.

If you plan to connect a 4-pin CPU connector to a motherboard with more than two RAMS, two HDDs, and an external graphics card or GPU, then it will not work. It is because the power consumption demand of your motherboard is more than what your power supply with a 4-pin CPU power plug can provide.
On the other hand, the EATX power supply unit for the motherboard with an 8 + 4 pin ESP power connector has two different power levels. The maximum power it can provide through the 8-pins is more or less 336 watts. At the same time, the total power that its 4-pin CPU power plug can provide is more or less 168 watts.
Why is The an Extra 4-pin CPU Power?
It is good news if your power supply unit (PSU) has an extra 4-pin CPU power connector because it can provide more power than the older power supplies. This CPU power plug is for providing additional power to your PC hardware. Technically speaking, it has two 12-volt wires for the motherboards and GPUs, with more power demand.
It is also possible that this extra 4-pin CPU power plug is for your external graphics card or GPU. Nearly all 2-fan GPUs (graphics processing units) require additional power, including the one they get from the PCIe slot of your computer system’s motherboard. You should connect it to your graphics card.
When you overclock your CPU, GPU, or RAM, your hardware requires more power. Your computer system’s motherboard draws this power from your PC’s power supply unit (PSU). It is why there are motherboards that use PSUs with an extra 4-pin CPU power connector to fulfill the power demands of your PC.
Do I Need an 8-pin CPU Power Connector?
If you have mainstream AMD or Intel and intend to use your computer system usually, then you need to connect either of the 8-pin CPU power plugs. Because the power provided by the single CPU power plug with 8-pins is more or less 336 watts. And this amount of power is enough for a standard PC.
On the other hand, if you want to overclock your hardware, attach multiple GPUs and monitors, and add more SSDs and RAMs (memory modules), then you should plug both of the 8-pin CPU power connectors into your PC motherboard. This way, your devices, and your CPU will have enough power to work correctly.
Can I Use a 4-Pin in 8-Pin Motherboard?
You can never use a 4-pin connector in a motherboard with an 8-pin connectivity option. We will recommend you upgrade your power supply unit (PSU) instead. It is because, in this way, your computer system’s motherboard and other hardware will have enough power to work correctly without any starvation.

Contrary to this, if you forcefully connect the 4-pin CPU power plug to the 8-pin and try to overclock your CPU, RAMs, or GPU, then not only will your motherboard be at risk, but also your power supply unit (PSU) can burn out. Connecting more hardware, such as RAMs, GPUs, MIC, etc., can overload your power supply.
Moreover, if the 4-pin CPU power plug is not connected to the right place, it can damage your computer system’s motherboard and other components. That is why we recommend you upgrade your PSU to an 8-pin motherboard with an extra 4-pin CPU power connector.
Is 8 Pin CPU Same as PCIe?
PCIe stands for peripheral component interconnect express. It is nothing but the slots on your motherboard that connect your graphics card (also known as GPU). On the other hand, an 8-pin CPU power plug is a different thing. It is connected to your motherboard, so you can switch your PC on.
Not only that, but the 8-pin CPU power plug is also a power cord that provides power to all of the internal and external devices connected to it. Such as CPU, GPU, RAMs, SSDs, Keyboard, Mouse, etc. Simply put, a PCIe can only provide power to the device connected to it until the 8-pin CPU power plug is attached.
What is The Proper Way to Plug in a CPU Power Plug?
First, for plugging in a CPU, you need to carefully clean your motherboard using a brush and a vacuum. Because tiny dust particles can affect the performance of your CPU very much. Secondly, insert the CPU in its socket and adequately apply thermal paste. After that, put the heatsink on and clip or screw it.
Next, look for the ESP socket on your motherboard. The number of pins varies in these sockets with the type of motherboard. There are older motherboards with 4-pin, 6-pin, and 8-pin CPU power connector sockets. Even the latest motherboards have 8 + 4-pin ESP sockets and two 8-pin sockets for powering the CPU and other devices.
Conclusion
The 8-pin CPU power connector plays an essential role in your computer system. It powers up the CPU and other components, such as RAMs, GPUs, etc. It is why most PC motherboards come with either a 4-pin or 8-pin ESP socket. Therefore, connecting the right power plug can increase your device’s performance and protect them from burning out.
8 Pin EPS Connectors: A quick guide for free
Have you ever noticed those wire junctions connected everywhere inside your CPU? have you ever wondered what those are used for? What is the science behind them and their other counterparts? Well, if yes, you are at the right place. We at Toolspond are always at your service.
Eight pin EPS connectors are widely used today in Power Supply Unit ( PSU). The 8 pin EPS connector is what connects the end of your 8-pin EPS cable to your power supply and motherboard.
They are manufactured to very high standards and work with all compatible terminals. There are male and female types of 8 EPS connectors available.
The science behind eight-pin EPS connectors
Because there are specific connectors manufactured for high-end motherboards and CPUs that require additional power for backward compatibility, the eight-pin EPS 12V includes an 8-pin connector. It’s a second connector to the motherboard (in addition to the 24-pin ATX motherboard connector) that provides dedicated CPU power.
The technology behind EPS connectors
EPS stands for the Entry-Level Power Supply Specification. It is a power supply unit designed for computers with high power consumption and entry-level servers. The EPS form factor is derived from the ATX form factor itself; in fact, it could be termed as the variant of the ATX form factor. Developed by the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) forum, EPS soon rose to power with a collection of firms that research and develop server standards, including Intel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and others. The most recent server standard is V2.93.
Theoretically speaking, EPS-type PSUs are compatible with standard ATX or ATX12V motherboards typically used in homes and offices. However, complications may arise if the connector or the 12 V ports overhangs the circuit in the case of newer boards. Several manufacturers provide unflappable accessories to save you from this worst-case scenario.
Eight pin EPS connector and its counterpart PCI-E connector
The EPS connector is used to power a motherboard’s CPU socket, whereas the PCI express connector is used to power a graphics card.
The square and rounded-off connections are organized so that you shouldn’t be able to swap between them. The top left relationship on the EPS 12V is squared off, but the top left connector on the PCI – E is rounded off in the previous image. Differences like this prevent a PCI -E connection from being plugged into an eight-pin EPS1 2V.
Is the eight-pin EPS connector interchangeable with PCI -E?
Attempting to swap between them will cause physical damage from trying to fit physically different connections and electrical harm from reversing the device’s power supplies. To figure out what a cable is, I’d recommend looking at the connectors (which are usually labeled), as well as the order/color of the power cables connecting to the connection. On the other hand, connectors are not typically color-labeled.
Applications of 8 Pin EPS connector
There are varied applications of EPS connectors, and over time, it has become quite a thing to include these in complex CPU wirings.
Basic Z590 motherboards, like the more minor mATX variants, now include at least one four-pin and eight-pin EPS connector socket, and many (including my ASRock Z590 Steel Legend) feature two 8pin EPS connectors.
Going up to the most power-hungry LGA 1200 CPU, the i9 10900K/F, there are two total 8-pin EPS sockets; the use is justified as they are targeted for higher-end machines with extremely powerful overclockers.
To make your pc more eye-catching
8-Pin EPS extension cables are an excellent method to improve the overall appearance of your computer without the effort or price of a wholly sleeved and single braided power supply cable set. Once you’ve connected the 8-Pin EPS Extension to your current cable set, you’re good to go.
Eight pin EPS Vs. 4 pin connector – which one to use?
Various connection standards exist. These ports provide power to the CPU.
Initially reserved for professional servers, the 8 Pin EPS connector is now used on various consumer boards. It has a higher power output than the 4-pin.
With only a 4-pin attached, most motherboards with an eight-pin EPS receptacle will work (filling half of the receptacle).
For most CPUs, a 4-pin connection is sufficient, and no CPU on an H110 board would “bottleneck” due to a 4-pin connector. A Core i7-7700K will only demand additional power if it is overclocked, and hence the use of 8 pin EPS would become inevitable.
4+4 Pin EPS vs. 8 pin EPS
| 8 pin EPS | 4+4 Pin EPS |
|---|---|
| 8 Pin EPS are the CPU connector cables that have 8 pins in the connectors | 4+4 pin Connecters are essentially 8 pin connectors only, just split into two. |
| These work as a single connecter unit. | These are split into two 4-pin connectors. |
| They work in the newer CPUs. | They only work in the older CPUs, which only have 4-pin ports on the motherboards. |
| They cannot be used interchangeably in the older motherboards. | These also cannot be used interchangeably. |
8 pin EPS vs. 4+4 pin
Can an 8-pin EPS connector be maxed out?
If you’re not using a bad cable or some unknown type of motherboard, you’ll never max out a current 8-pin EPS. I’m not sure what the precise figure is, but they’re all capable of drawing at least 300W per 8-pin (maybe even 400W?), cannot be indeed said. For one thing, Buildzoid mentions it often every time he examines a board with two or more 8pin EPS connectors.
All were owing to the widespread adoption of broad, solid power pins on recent motherboards. When you compare the size of the EPS pins on your board to something from 12 years ago, you’ll notice a significant difference.

FAQs on 8 Pin EPS
How to buy 8 Pin EPS connectors?
They are readily available online from any e-commerce site, depending upon the requirement. Alternatively, you can find them in any electronic accessory shop specializing in computer accessories.
Alternatives of 8-pin EPS connectors?
There are many alternatives found in the market, and each of them can be used with almost identical efficiency, provided the system is not hardcore overclocked. Some of the options are – 4 pin connectors, two 4pin connectors can be effectively used, but again ! everything depends upon the usage.
Can 8 pin EPS connecter cause heating problems?
Ideally, no, there is not a chance to max out an eight-pin EPS connector. The whole logic behind using multiple wires instead of one is to connect them in parallel to minimize energy dissipation.
8 pin cpu power supply
- Molex

Остальные 2 пина черного цвета = GND (земля)Do I need both the 8 pin and 4 pin cpu power plug for my MSI B450 Pro Carbon?
I have bought a new mainboard, an MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon, and to my surprise, it features 12 pins for the cpu power connection.

My power supply, a Pure Power 10 BN274 600 Watt, only features 2 x 4 pins connectors. Luckily, it has cable management, yet before I buy an extra 4- or 8-pin cable, I wonder:
Do I actually need to buy an extra cable to get the board up and running? Would the board run fine just with the 8 ports being plugged in? If so, which one should I chose?
The CPU in question for me is a Ryzen 2700X.

From experience, it suffices to install the 8 pin connector on the left.
The right 4-pin-connector is basically a redundancy that the CPU may draw upon under extreme load most likely only relevant when you do extreme overclocking.
(The board manufacturers most likely also build in some more extra room in case the next CPU generation needs more power.)
So only connect the 2 ports ( CPU_PWR_1 ) on the left, and leave the right one ( CPU_PWR_2 ) empty. If your system won’t boot or doesn’t run stable, only then you should consider buying the extra cable or upgrading your PSU.

To provide another example per paulgreg’s answer, I am currently running a Ryzen 7 3700X with an MSI X570 Gaming PLUS. I just installed everything this morning and have been running benchmarks and stress tests all afternoon. My system is running perfectly stable with only the 8-pin CPU connector.
At this point, I’m inclined to believe everyone that the extra 4-pin connector is only there for redundancy in heavy overclocking.

I’ve bought a Ryzen 3700X (65 watts TDP), a MSI X570-A PRO (with also both connectors) and a Seasonic FOCUS Plus Gold 550 as PSU. As you, I discovered the two CPU connectors on the motherboard and that the PSU only had a single CPU 8 pin (2×4) connector.
I tried with that single connector and the system (Windows 10) froze after several minutes of normal use (CPU was not under stress). My system also hosts a Geforce 1070 and 3 SATA SSDs. It draws around 100
150 watt of power without screen, far from PSU 550 watts maximum power.
I’ve replaced the PSU with my 10 year’s old Corsair HX520 (which had both connectors) and the system is perfectly stable since.
So, at least for Ryzen 3000, I think you need to connect both CPU connectors to avoid Windows 10 freeze.
Also, the MSI x570 A PRO manual (page 32) explicitly says « Important : Make sure that all the power cables are securely connected to a proper ATX power supply to ensure stable operation of the motherboard » on the Power Connectors page
